Katy’s journey to date has taken her through various walks of life.

Growing up in England with four younger siblings, she quickly developed leadership skills and was always interested in people and relationships.   She became the Global Awareness Facilitator at her church, leading a team to increase global awareness and facilitate advocacy work, motivating people to make links between global poverty and day to day living.

Katy loved the creativity of dance and art and used these to tell stories and express things that cannot always be put into words. With the art of communication being important to her she also took time to learn British Sign Language.

In 1998 her journey to Southern Africa began. Katy spent time with Oasis Trust in Zimbabwe, working with churches, small community projects and street kids. Her compassion for street kids grew, and in 2000 she moved to Beira, Mozambique where she helped run a home for teenage boys who had come off the streets.  Living without running water and on a dollar-a-day budget for food at the project, Katy’s empathy for those living with little grew, along with her heart for the poor and marginalised.

On returning to the UK, Katy began her teaching career after graduating from Kingston University with a BA (Hons) in Primary Education (First Class Honours).  She moved to South Africa in 2007 to marry her South African husband, Tony. Katy was the Head of Thinking Skills at St Peter’s School in Johannesburg where she led the team that resulted in St Peter’s being accredited as a Thinking School by Exeter University in 2014. Following this she ran the library, creating a space that celebrated diversity and developed the school’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion curriculum for Grades 3-7, Izenzo Zobuntu.

Katy is a creative and dynamic leader in her field. She has developed training materials on various Thinking Tools that have enabled teachers across South Africa to teach their curriculum with a Thinking Philopsophy at its core and engage their students in a deeper experience of learning. Katy was a founder member of Thinking Schools South Africa (TSSA) and has trained hundreds of teachers for TSSA in a variety of Thinking Tools and as an accredited Thinking Maps Trainer.  Katy is passionate about Positive Education and the holistic wellbeing of both children and adults.

After 15 years of thriving in Jozi, Katy now lives in Ballito, KZN, moving back to her husband’s roots. When she is not busy developing Thrive Together content, training, or being Mum to her three daughters, Katy loves running, swimming in the sea, reading, arts and crafts, cooking and Masterchef Australia!
